Relax With Lemon Balm
Patty in Wellness Sheds Light On This Magical Medicinal Herb
Lemon balm is a member of the mint family and considered a nervine herb. The leaves and flowers contain volatile oils, tannins, and bitters which have a relaxing and antispasmodic effect on the stomach and nervous system. It is a lovely spreading perennial that is easy to grow and very fragrant. Lemongrass oil is helpful for herpes when applied topically in a cream, tincture, or essential oil. The Merc carries various products in the Wellness department that also contain lemon balm for this purpose.
Lemon balm is one of my favorite nerviness. I love to sip on some in the evening to wind down before bedtime. If I am feeling anxious or too hyper, a cup of lemon balm alone or blended with other relaxing herbs will definitely chill me out. Start out with a heaping teaspoon per 8 oz. cup of water. Boil the water and pour over the herb. I like to put a lid on the cup as it steeps to keep those volatile from evaporating.
Lemon Balm is located in the single herbs and spices section. It is also one of the ingredients in three of our herbal tea blends: the Peaceful Dreams and Relaxing Tea are “Merc made” blends and the Chamomile Lemon is a blend made by the Republic of Tea company.
Please give them a try and see which works the best for you. Or, if you are really adventurous, create your own blend. Either way, I am sure you will enjoy the results.
