Each month, The Merc Co+op Board of Directors shares the decisions and topics discussed at their most recent meeting, promoting transparency and accountability with co-op owners.
Notes from the Annual Retreat

From Melissa Hayes-Williams, Board President
After our recent Board of Directors’ Annual Retreat, I felt an incredible sense of privilege serving on the co-op’s board and an even greater honor as the President.
Our Columinate advisor, Michael Healey, guided us through common challenges faced by co-op boards nationwide—policy governance and being responsible, thoughtful stewards for the owners we represent. We reviewed our current policies and processes to ensure compliance and considered adjustments in light of the current societal climate. Rest assured that you, the owners of The Merc Co+op, have elected sharp and proactive directors who will make decisions with your best interests in mind—because we are owners too!
Following this retreat, here’s what you can expect:
Our GM, Seth Naumann, is managing an exceptional staff and ensuring The Merc Co+op thrives as a consumer-owned cooperative in our region.
Seth keeps the board informed of current trends and future outlooks to best serve our co-op’s two stores.
Your board stays updated on co-op trends to help us achieve our goals.
We will focus on owner engagement and seek ways to hear from you, such as through “Coffee with Board Members.”
Most importantly, we will consider our owners, community, and partners in all decisions.
It’s never too early to think about running for the board. We will soon provide information about becoming a board member and hold information sessions to help potential candidates understand what to expect as a Board Director.
The Board and staff met at the Hollis Renewal Center in KCK. Meal catered by local Anna’s BLD Bistro and Catering.
About the Board
The Merc Co+op's Board of Directors is comprised of nine co-op owners who are elected by the general ownership and serve a three-year term. Any co-op owner can run for a board position.
The board creates a set of policies to govern themselves and the General Manager, who provides the group with regular reports on store operations. The board delegates all operational matters to the General Manager.
Board Meetings
All co-op owners are invited to attend monthly board meetings. Early in the agenda, the board reserves ten minutes of space to hear from owners who wish to address the board.
