MEET DORRI
Hello, my name is Dorri Rowan. I am a resident of Kansas City, Missouri and a member of First Baptist Church of Kansas City, Kansas. I have a spouse and two sons who graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. I enjoy reading, traveling, and visiting my two grandsons in Crown Point, Indiana.
Why did you choose to run for the co-op board? I joined the Merc Co-op board of directors because I am deeply committed to the community and helping others. The Merc is a vital part of our local food system, providing access to high-quality products while supporting local producers.
What part of the co-op's mission do you connect with the most, and why?
I connect with the concern for the community the most because access to good, nutritious, affordable food should be a fundamental right. It is important that we prioritize initiatives to improve food access and promote healthy eating habits to ensure the well-being of individuals in the community.
What is something you've gained from participating on this board?
I have gained valuable leadership skills, a better understanding of cooperative principles, and had the opportunity to work with a group of wonderful individuals who share the passion for improving the food system while helping the community. Serving on the board has allowed me to contribute to the co-op’s mission and make a positive impact in the Kansas City, KS, and Lawrence community.
What is one thing you hope the co-op achieves/works towards during your term as a director?
I would hope to use my influence and knowledge to help sustain the co-op in the Kansas City, KS area and help promote growth in the Kansas City, KS and Lawrence stores.
Why should owners consider becoming a director?
Owners should consider becoming a director so that they might influence the direction of the co-op and ensure that its mission and values align with the community in which it operates. By serving on the board, a director can help shape the co-op’s future and strengthen the community for sustainable food choices and practices.
What is your favorite food or product the co-op carries?
Of course, the pumpkin bread is the best!
