Patagonia Canned Seafood

Lemon herb mussels, smoked mussels in olive oil, lemon caper mackerel, roasted garlic mackerel

We love Atlantic mackerel for the delicate flavor and firm, meaty texture we crave from larger fish, like tuna or swordfish. But while big, apex-predator fish are dwindling, their numbers diminished by overharvest, mackerel are thriving. As small, schooling fish, mackerel are found in abundant populations, which can sustain responsible harvest. Our Atlantic Mackerel are caught by hook and line to minimize bycatch and maximize quality, while supporting a community of traditional, small-boat fishermen in Santoña, Spain. Mackerel also provide protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B-12 and other essential nutrients without the high levels of accumulated toxins associated with larger fish. Seasoned with traditional Mediterranean flavors and packed in organic olive oil, our Atlantic Mackerel makes eating lower on the food chain an easy, satisfying part of any snack or meal.

The Pérez Lafuente family has been in the seafood business in Villanova de Arousa since the 1880s. Today, they grow, harvest, prepare and pack our mussels with a fierce commitment to sustainably sourced seafood and organic ingredients. When we talk about like-minded food producers, the Pérez Lafuente family is the kind of partner we mean. We’re proud to be working with them. Of course, we chose to source our mussels from Western Spain because of the commitment—to quality and planet-friendly practices—of the Pérez Lafuente family. But there are other reasons as well: First, the Galician coast is one of the first places to implement an organic certification for mussel aquaculture; and second, mussels are native to the region, which means cultivation there doesn’t introduce invasive species as it does in other places.
